HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Junior Lisa Gartland and freshman Kayla Smith each homered for Lewis as the Flyers defeated No. 16 North Georgia College & State 5-4 (8 innings) and fell to No. 15 Valdosta State 6-5, Sunday afternoon at the Charger Chillout, hosted by the University of Alabama Huntsville. In the win over North Georgia, The Flyers (2-6) came from behind to earn the win. Lewis took a 2-0 lead thanks to RBI singles from freshman Stephanie Harmon and junior Courtney Lyons, but the Saints answered with a two-run home run to tie the game. Gartland broke the tie with a solo home run, her first of the season, but the Saints rallied for two more runs to take a 4-3 lead. Gartland came through again in the seventh with an RBI double to tie the game 4-4. The Flyers' winning run came when sophomore Lexie Vernon sprinted home on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Lyons (2-2) took the win in the circle after pitching effectively for the final three innings. Down 6-2 late against Valdosta State, the Flyers rallied for three runs in the sixth inning, but couldn't get any closer. Lewis' three six-inning runs came via RBI singles by sophomore Kara Harmatys, Smith and senior Mallory Paine. Paine totaled four hits combined in the two games on Sunday. A run-scoring double by senior Carla Musillo and Smith's homer accounted for Lewis' first two runs against the Blazers. Smith was 4-for-4 in the game with the homer, two doubles and a single. She totaled three RBI and scored two runs. The Flyers return to action on March 1 when they head to Kissimmee, Fla., for 10 games at the annual Rebel Spring Games. |
