KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Senior Carla Musillo's two-out double in the third inning scored two runs and provided junior pitcher Courtney Lyons all the support she would need in a 2-1 victory over Grand Valley State, Thursday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games. Earlier in the day, the Flyers fell to Palm Beach Atlantic 8-3. Musillo's two-RBI double plated senior Mallory Paine and freshman Kayla Smith, who both singled ahead of Musillo. Lyons (6-3) struck out nine in the win, allowing just the one earned run which occurred in the sixth on a RBI single after a lead-off double. Lyons had pitched 40 1/3 straight innings without allowing an earned run prior to the two-out RBI single in the sixth. Against Palm Beach Atlantic, the Flyers tied the game 1-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Paine, but the Sailfish responded with five runs over the two innings to take a comfortable lead. Lewis added their third run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior Lisa Gartland to make it a 6-3 count, but the Sailfish answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Kelly Dianis went 3-for-3 in the game, collecting a RBI single in the fourth for Lewis' second run of the game. Freshman Stephanie Harmon was 2-for-3. Junior Julie Wingerter (0-2) suffered the loss. The Flyers concluded their Florida trip 8-2 to improve their season record to 10-8. The Flyers return to action on March 15 with a conference doubleheader at Quincy. |
