OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -
For the third straight year, the University of Louisville rowing team earned a runner-up finish at the BIG EAST Championships, while Notre Dame won its fifth straight conference team title on Sunday at Melton Hill Lake.
The Cards advanced to the grand final in each of the six racing events, earning four second-place finishes to score 105 total points, while Notre Dame swept the six event finals to score 123 points and clinch the 2008 BIG EAST team trophy. Syracuse finished third overall for the third straight year scoring 92 points, followed by Georgetown in fourth with 85 and Rutgers in fifth with 67 points.
In the Varsity Eight Final, the No. 21 ranked Cards completed the 2,000-meter race course in a time of 6:46.08, while the No. 18 ranked Fighting Irish led the way with a time of 6:43.60. Syracuse was a distant third in the race with a time of 6:55.78.
In the Second Varsity Eight Final, Louisville's crew finished with a second-place time of 7:02.47, while Notre Dame covered the course in a time of 6:51.80. Georgetown was third with a time of 7:10.94, followed by Syracuse in fourth at 7:12.60.
Along with the two runner-up finishes in varsity races, the Cards also had strong finishes from their novice crews. Louisville was second overall in the Novice Eight Final with a time of 7:06.10, less than one second behind first place Notre Dame's time of 7:05.50. Rutgers was third with a time of 7:21.27 followed by Georgetown in fourth at 7:21.60.
In the Novice Four Final, the Cards finished second with a time of 8:23.74, while Notre Dame led the way at 8:11.50. Georgetown was third at 8:27.93, followed by UConn in fourth at 9:09.07.
Up next, the Cards will compete at the NCAA South/Central Region Sprints on May 17-18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
