Armando Favela Wins PGA Minority Championship

May 12, 2008

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Armando Favela (Tijuana, Mexico/St. Augustine), a junior on the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team, made a name for himself over the weekend by earning medalist honors in the men's independent division at the 22nd PGA Minority Collegiate Championship, which was played at the Ryder and Wanamaker courses at The PGA Golf Club. Favela, a two-time All-Horizon League honoree, carded a 54-hole score of 215 (71-68-76) to hold off Amit Odaiyar of Florida Atlantic (71-73-73=217) and Vincent Johnson of Oregon State (73-74-71=218).

After opening up the tournament with a one-under-par 71 on the 6,811-yard course, Favela fired a four-under 68 in round two on May 10, and finished up play with a 76 yesterday to place first in the independent division.

Favela was an All-Horizon League selection this season and led the Ramblers with a 75.3 average in 30 rounds. At the Horizon League Championship two weeks ago, the left-hander tied for sixth with a 223 (76-74-73).

Nearly 200 contestants from 47 colleges and universities comprised the field for the 2008 PGA Minority Collegiate Championship.
