Loyola Puts Up Fight, Falls To No. 11/14 Washington, 3-0, In Opener
Feb. 8, 2008
LAS VEGAS - A year removed from knocking off three nationally ranked teams, the Loyola University Chicago (0-1) softball team lifted the lid on the 2008 season this morning by dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 11/14 Washington (1-0) at the Sportco Spring Kick-Off Classic hosted by UNLV. Six Ramblers pounded out hits as Loyola had numerous chances to score a run, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunities. One of those golden opportunities came in the top of the first inning when Kat Krause led off with an infield hit and would later to steal both second and third base. However, Krause was called out for leaving third early, spoiling a single by Amy Solava that could have plated a run. Washington drew first blood, scoring a run without the benefit of a hit, in the bottom of the second inning. After Loyola was unable to push a run across despite having a runner on second with one out in the third, the Huskies added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Loyola mounted one more major threat in the top of the sixth. Angie Funston led off with a single and moved to second on Krause's groundout. A single by Ellen Kresl gave the Ramblers runners at the corners with one out, but Caitlin Noble wiggled her way out of trouble by striking out the next two Ramblers to preserve the lead. Solava was impressive in the circle for Loyola despite struggling with her control. Although she issued seven walks, the right-hander allowed only three hits and stuck out five, while allowing only one earned run. Loyola continues play at the tournament this afternoon when it faces host UNLV at 4:45 p.m. Pacific. |
