2.5.08 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels used a big first inning against the Austin College Kangaroos to claim their first win of the season, Tuesday, Feb 5. The Evangels jumped past the Kangaroos 17-7. "We had a tremendous performance from the plate today, and it carried us for the win," MACU Head Coach Jason Blackwell said. "It feels good to pick up that first win of the season." MACU's offense came alive against the Kangaroos. The Evangels scored 11 runs in the first inning, finishing the game with 17 runs. The Evangel batters went 17-for-36 from the plate, including two home runs and five doubles. The Evangels started the game hot from the plate, scoring five runs before the Kangaroos recorded an out. MACU finished the top of the first inning with 11 runs and nine hits. AC scored one run in the bottom of the first, but the Evangels still held the lead, 11-1. MACU scored a run in the top of the second inning, while the Kangaroos scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning, and scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the MACU lead, 12-5. The two defenses held up strong in the middle innings, but the Evangels scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game away. MACU held off AC in the bottom of the seventh inning and picked up its first win of the season. Evangel pitcher Tyler Grimes picked up the win, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, and striking out three AC batters. Junior Jake Scott had a big day at the plate, going 1-for-3 with four RBI's, including a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Austin Boswell went 2-for-5 with three RBI's and a solo home run. The Evangels improve to 1-3 on the season, and remain 0-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. MACU will play Southwestern Assemblies of God University on the road Saturday, Feb 9.
