MACU Takes Two from SAGU

2.9.08 - WAXAHACHIE, Texas- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels took two games from the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions Saturday, Feb 9. The Evangels shutout the Lions in the first game, 8-0, and beat the Lions the second game, 12-2.

The Evangels defense came up big in the two games, allowing just two runs, and committing just one error. The MACU offense continued its strong showing, scoring 20 runs in two games, and showed patience at the plate by drawing ten walks on the day.

In the first game, MACU threatened in the top half of the first, but failed to get any runs on the board. Senior Chad Lantz shut-down the Lions batters in the bottom of the first inning. The Evangels scored a run in the second and third inning, while Lantz continued to shutdown the SAGU offense.

The Evangels broke the game open with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, and stretched their lead, 6-0. Lantz continued to dominate the Lions hitters, and MACU scored two insurance runs in the seventh inning to come away with the win.

Lantz pitched six shut-out innings, giving up four hits and striking out six SAGU batters. Senior Matt Howard, Sophomore T.J. Munch, and Sophomore A.J. Boswell scored two runs a piece in the game for the Evangels.

MACU scored the first run in the first game, when Senior Mike Wlikinson came around to score on a sacrifice, but the Lions responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs, taking a 2-1 lead.

The Evangels responded in the second inning, scoring three runs and regaining the lead, 4-2. Evangel pitcher Douglas Kane shut-out the SAGU batters for the rest of the game, while MACU built its lead, by scoring eight runs in the final three innings of the game.

Kane pitched four innings, giving up two runs and striking out seven Lions batters. Senior Jon Reed scored three runs and stole two bases on the day, while Munch and Freshman Alex Webb had two RBI's a piece.

The Evangels improve to 3-4 on the season, and remain 0-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

MACU will play Kansas Wesleyan University at home, Tuesday, Feb 12. The first game of the double-header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
