2.22.08 - PLAINVIEW, Texas - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels were swept by Sooner Athletic Conference foe, the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers, in a double header Friday, Feb 22. The Evangels fell in the first game 6-1, and in the second game 4-1.

The Evangels batted just 6-for-45 in the two games, and managed just two runs in the double header. MACU committed four errors on the day, while giving up four unearned runs. The Evangels gave up 13 Pioneer hits, and allowed ten WBU runs.

In the first game, Senior Chad Lantz got the start from the mound for MACU and shut-out the WBU batters in the first inning, but the Evangels failed to get any runners across the plate in the top of the first inning. The Evangels were shut-out in the top of the second inning, while the Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 3-0 lead.

WBU scores two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, taking a 5-0 lead. The Evangels rallied in the top of the sixth inning, but the Pioneers got out of a jam and gave up just one MACU run. WBU scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for the win.

Lantz pitched six innings, giving up four earned runs, and striking out five WBU batters. Senior Mike Wilkinson picked up the lone RBI for the Evangels, and finished the game 1-for-2.

The second game was a pitcher's dual between Evangel pitcher Douglas Kane and Pioneer pitcher Gary Gates. The Pioneers scored a run in the top of the first inning, while the Evangels failed to get a runner across the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Both teams were shut-out in the second, third, and fourth innings.

MACU managed a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Pioneers got a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning and took a 2-1 lead. The Evangels failed to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning, while WBU scored two insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning, which lead to a 4-1 win.

Kane pitched six innings and gave up two earned runs. Junior Jake Scott went 3-for-3 on the night, and scored the only MACU run. Freshman Brad Workman picked up the only RBI for the Evangels.

The Evangels drop to 3-8 on the season, and 0-5 in SAC play.

MACU will play the final game of the series against the Pioneers Saturday, Feb 23. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
