Feb. 23, 2008 2.23.08 - PLAINVIEW, Texas - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels lost in a slugfest against the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers in Sooner Athletic Conference action Saturday, Feb 23. The Evangels fell to the Pioneers, 20-16. The Evangels went 17-for-43, which included four homeruns. MACU scored sixteen runs in the game, but gave up eighteen earned runs. The Evangels and Pioneers went through five pitchers a piece in the offensive showdown, while the MACU and WBU hitters hit a combined 39 hits. The Pioneers jumped on the Evangels early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, while shutting out MACU in the top of the first inning. MACU answered right back in the third inning, when Senior Jon Reed hit a base clearing single that scored two runs; and Sophomore Rocky Polk brought Reed in by hitting a home run to left field. The game was tied 4-4 after the Evangel rally, but WBU scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-4 lead. The Pioneers scored two more runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth inning, taking a 15-4 lead. MACU rallied in the top of the sixth inning, scoring nine runs on seven hits. Junior Jake Scott opened the inning with a solo shot to left field. Freshman Alex Webb hit a two-run homerun two batters later, knocking in two runs, and cutting the lead 15-7. By the end of the top half of the inning MACU trimmed the WBU lead, 15-13. However, the Pioneers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs and stretching their lead, 20-13. The Evangels rallied in the top of the ninth inning, but only managed three runs, as WBU held on for the win. Webb finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs, four RBI's, and two homeruns. Reed had four RBI's on the day, while Polk had two RBI's. Senior Matt Howard and Sophomore A.J. Boswell contributed a RBI a piece. Sophomore T.J. Munch went 4-for-5 on the day, including three runs. The Evangels fall to 3-10 on the season, and 0-6 in SAC play. MACU will battle Southwestern Assemblies of God University at home Tuesday, Feb 26.
