March 13, 2008 3.13.08 - SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels picked up their first Sooner Athletic Conference win, Thursday, March 13. The Evangels defeated the St. Gregory's University Cavaliers, 8-7. "I am very proud of how the guys played today," MACU Head Coach Jason Blackwell said. "We could have given up, but we fought back and picked up the win." The Evangels went 10-for-35 on the day, including two triples and two homeruns. The Cavaliers went 7-for-42 for the game, scoring six earned runs. MACU score eight runs, five of them coming in the final three innings of the game. The Evangels committed one error on the day, while SGU had no errors. Senior Mike Wilkinson jump started the Evangel with a lead-off home run, giving the Evangels a 1-0 advantage. The Cavaliers tied the game up in the bottom of the first, and took the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second inning. The Evangels answered in the top of the third inning, tying the game, 2-2, but SGU regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Alex Webb and Sophomore T.J. Munch hit back-to-back triples in the fourth inning, knotting the game up, 3-0. SGU scored two runs in the fifth and sixth inning, taking a 7-3 advantage. In the seventh inning, Junior Rocky Polk got the Evangel right back in the game with a three-run homerun. The Evangels took the lead, 8-7, in the next inning and never looked back. Tyler Grimes picked up the win for the Evangel, pitching two shut-out innings, while Douglas Kane picked up the save. Wilkinson finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI's. Polk went 1-for-5 with three RBI's. Munch went 3-for-4 with two RBI's. The Evangels improve to 5-16 on the season, and 1-12 in SAC play. MACU will complete its series with SGU Saturday, March 15 with a double header.
