MACU Sweeps Double Header Against HFWBC

4.24.08 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels swept the double header against the Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College Saints, Thursday, April 24. It took nine innings in both games, but the Evangels beat the Saints, 6-5, in the first game, and won the second game, 8-7.

MACU went 30-for-69 in the two games, while HFWBC hit 28-for-80 on the day. The Evangels committed six errors on the day, but leading to only one unearned run. MACU left 27 base runners on base in the two games.

In the first game, the Evangels struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore T.J. Munch hit a RBI double to give the Evangels the lead. The Saints tied the game in the top of the third inning, but MACU answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Jake Scott hit a RBI single, while Junior Rocky Polk advanced home on a wild pitch.

MACU stretched its lead, 5-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs off of another RBI single by Scott, and a RBI single from Freshman Collin Greuter. The Saints rallied in the next two innings, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning and another run in the top of the seventh, forcing the game into extra innings. Both teams threatened in the eighth inning, but failed to score. Freshman Brad Workman had the game winning hit, scoring Freshman Joseph Moore in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Junior Douglas Kane picked up the win, pitching three shut-out innings in relief. Scott finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored. Munch went 2-for-4 with a RBI, while Workman went 1-for-1 with a RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, HFWBC pounced on the Evangels early, taking an early lead, 7-0, in the opening innings, but MACU responded. The Evangels began to trim the lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Scott picked up his third his third RBI single of the day, while Senior Jon Reed scored on a hit batsman, and Polk scored on a sacrifice fly by Senior Matthew Howard.

MACU scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Munch drove in Polk and Scott, cutting the lead, 7-5. MACU took advantage of the Saints mistakes in the bottom of the sixth inning and tied the game, 7-7. Neither team managed runs in the seventh inning, and for the second time, the game went into extra innings. Both defenses shut-out the offenses in the eighth inning. Polk pulled off the heroics in the bottom of the ninth inning with a game winning hit, and completed the comeback.

Freshman Kyle Francis pitched three shut-out innings in relief and picked up the win. Polk went 3-for-4 with two RBI's, while Scott finished the game 3-for-3. Munch had two RBI's, while Freshman Alex Webb and Howard tallied the other MACU RBI's.

The Evangels improve to 12-34 on the season, and have finished the Sooner Athletic Conference schedule at 2-28.

MACU will complete its series with HFWBC on the road, Saturday, April 26. First game of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
