1.24.08 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels used late second heroics to fight off the John Brown University Eagles Thursday, Jan 24 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The Evangels defeated the Eagles 72-70. "This was a big win for us," Head Coach Willie Holley said. "We shot the ball well tonight, especially from the three." The Evangels used a strong shooting performance to come away with the win. MACU shot 71% from the three-point line, and outscored the Eagles 30-6 from the three-point arc. MACU held JBU to just 10% shooting from the three. The Evangels scored the first four points of the game, but the Eagles came back and grabbed an early 7-6 lead at the 16:32 mark. MACU went on an 8-0 run and took a 14-7 lead. The Evangels were able to maintain the lead throughout the first half. MACU closed out the first half on a 16-9 run and went into halftime with a 40-29 lead. The Eagles began to chip away at the MACU lead, and pulled within four points with 10:25 remaining in the game. The remaining of the game was back and forth, with MACU holding on to its lead. JBU tied the game at 64-64 with less than four minutes left to go in the game. The Eagles took control of the lead, 70-66, at the 2:50 mark. MACU closed the game on a 6-0 run, which included another game winning basket by Senior Donald Thorne with 7.2 seconds remaining in the game. The Evangels tightened up their defense on the Eagles ensuing possession and held on for the win. Senior Joe Brown scored a game high 21 points. Thorne contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Senior Tracy Wilkins and Junior Clint Nixon scored 10 points apiece. The Evangels improve to 8-10, and 4-6 in SAC play. Coach Holley inched closer to the 700 win mark, lacking just three wins. MACU will travel to Claremore, Okla. and battle Rogers State University Saturday, Jan 26.
