MACU Wraps Up Inaugural SAC Season

3.5.08 - EDMOND, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels wrapped up its inaugural Sooner Athletic Conference season against the Rogers State University Hillcats in the first round of the SAC Tournament Wednesday, March 5. The Evangels fell to the Hillcats, 98-63.

"We played well in the first half, but Rogers caught fire in the second half and we could never overcome that," MACU Head Coach Willie Holley said. "We now have to focus on playing in the NCCAA Regional Tournament."

The Evangels shot just 33% from the field in the second half, while the Hillcats shot 63% from the field overall and 61% from beyond the three-point line. RSU out rebounded MACU 45-33, and scored 18 second chance points, compared to just four MACU second chance points. The Hillcats bench outscored the Evangels bench, 67-34.

RSU scored the first five points of the game, but Senior Tracy Wilkins hit a three-point basket to trim the lead, 5-3, at the 18:05 mark. The Evangels kept the game closed throughout the first half, but failed to grab the lead.

MACU went into the locker room down at halftime, 44-38.

The Hillcats stretched their lead to double digits on the opening possession of the second half. MACU never cut the lead back to single digits in the second half. The Hillcats increased their lead throughout the second half, stretching their lead to over twenty points mid-way through the second half.

Junior Derek Winston came off the bench and scored 15 points. Wilkins finished the game with eight points, while Senior Donald Thorne contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

The Evangels are 8-23 on the season, and finish the SAC schedule at 4-19.

MACU will travel to Dallas, Texas and play in the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I Central Region Tournament Monday, March 10. Game Times have not yet been announced.
