Softball

Junior infielder Ashley Waters (Amesbury, MA) has put up big numbers for the Black Bear softball team, tallying 6 runs scored, 3 RBIs, 2 homeruns and a .636 slugging percentage.

The University of Maine softball team dropped a tough decision to Western Michigan by the score of 9-1. The game was the consolation round of the Stetson Invitational. The Black Bears fell to 0-10 on the season. Ashley Waters (Amesbury, Mass.) led Maine as she went 2-for-3 with a homerun.

Maine got off to a good start when Waters hit a homerun to left center to give the Black Bears a one run lead.

Western Michigan came back, and scored two runs in the second, two runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.

Terren Hall (Bucksport, ME.) hit a double in the fourth inning for Maine while Alexis Souhlaris (Derry, N.H.) added a base hit for the Black Bears.

Jenna Balent (Conifer, Colo.) took the loss and her record fell to 0-4.

Maine continues play on Tuesday, March 4, when the Black Bears battle Central Michigan in a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m. in Clearwater, Florida.

 
Curt Smith
Baseball

Curt Smith, a senior from Willemstad, Curacao, had an outstanding week at the plate for the Black Bear baseball team. In the first four games of the season Smith was 11 for 14 from the plate with 4 homeruns and 9 RBIs. His performance in a four game sweep of Delaware State earned him the America East Player of the Week honors.

Curt Smith leads Maine with two hits

The baseball team dropped a heartbreaker to UNLV by the score of 3-2. The Black Bears fell to 4-3 on the season while UNLV improved to 5-3. Maine was led by Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) who went 2-for-4 and Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) who went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Joe Miller (Valley Stream, N.Y) pitched eight strong innings, only giving up one earned run on five hits.

Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) got things off to a good start when he singled up the middle. Smith followed with a single and both runners advanced when Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) grounded out to second. McAvoy then hit a single of his own, scoring Martin from third. Smith was able to score when McAvoy was caught trying to steal second.

UNLV a run back in the third and the eighth to tie the game at two runs apiece. In the bottom of the ninth, UNLV was able to score on a balk with one out to win the game.

Will Carroll (Boothbay, Maine) took the loss and his record fell to 0-1 on the season.

Xavier Scruggs (Poway, Calif.) went 3-for-4 to lead UNLV.

Maine continues play on Tuesday, March 4, when the Black Bears take on Notre Dame at 2 p.m. in Palm Beach, Florida.
