Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Albany

BANGOR, Maine-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Albany on Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex at Husson College in Bangor, Maine. The Black Bears fell 5-2 in the first game and dropped the second one 8-3. Maine falls to 11-16-1 on the season with the loss and 1-3 in America East play. Albany improves to 8-24-1 overall and 4-4 in conference play. In the first game, Maine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) reached on catcher's interference and scored when Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine) singled to right field. Albany took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning when Ryan Gugel had a two-run single scoring Brendan Rowland and Sean Donovan, who led off the inning with back-to-back singles. The Great Danes added to their lead when Kyle Crean belted a two-run double to right field in the top of the fourth inning. Both Tom Zink and Gary Pitcheralle scored on the play. Albany made it a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Pete Eichner had an RBI single, plating Ryan Gugel. The Black Bears cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) led off the inning with a hit and scored when Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) singled to right field. Kyle Benoit (Brampton, Ontario) went four innings for Maine and allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out three batters in the game. He falls to 2-1 on the season. Jimmy Cox (Bangor, Maine) replaced Benoit and went three innings. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out three.
Josh Willimott went five innings and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits for Albany. He struck out four batters in the game while walking a pair. He improves to 4-1 on the season. Sean Gregory replaced Willimott and went two innings. He allowed two hits and fanned a pair. In the second game, Albany jumped out to an early 1-0 when Mike Konstanty had a RBI singled driving home Brendan Rowland who had walked in the top of the first inning. The Black Bear took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) drove home Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) with a sacrifice fly to knot the score at 1-1. Patane, who was hit, scored the second run of the game for the Black Bears when Joe Mercurio (Brewster, Mass.) singled to left field. Albany tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan Gugel led off the inning with a double to right field and scored when Gary Pitcheralle had an RBI single to left field. Albany scored four unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-2 lead without the benefit of a hit. Tom Zink was hit by a pitch. The next three batters reached on fielder's choices. Konstanty was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive home the first run. Brendan Rowland scored when Eichner grounded out. Gugel and Konstanty both scored on a wild pitch. Maine got a run back in the bottom of the eighth inning. Smith led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Joey Martin beat out an infield single. Albany added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning when Albany belted a two-run home run to left center field. Matt Jebb (Toronto, Ontario) started for Maine and went seven innings. He allowed six runs, two of which were earned, on six hits. He struck out eight batters in the game. He falls to 2-2 on the season. Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao) relieved Jebb and went the final two innings and allowed two runs on a pair of hits. He struck out two batters. Dave Kubiak went seven innings for the Great Danes. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out six. He improves to 1-0 on the season. Dave Nobel relieved Kubiak and pitched the final two innings. Maine returns to action on Wednesday, April 16 when they face Coppin State in Baltimore, Md. -U-M- |
