Patane, Jackson Lead Maine Past UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md.-- The University of Maine baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 7-7 tie and defeat UMBC 11-7 on Saturday night in Baltimore, Md. The Black Bears improve to 14-17-1 on the season with the victory and 3-4 in America East play. UMBC falls to 11-22 on the season and 3-8 in conference play.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) doubled down the left field line and scored when Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) hit a sacrifice fly. The Retrievers scored a pair of runs on RBI hits by Joe Fowler and Will Delawter in the bottom of the inning.

The Black Bears tied the game in the top of the second inning when Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) doubled and scored when Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) grounded out.

Maine then scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 7-2 lead. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) singled through the right side. Smith followed with a single to left field. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) had a RBI single plating Menendez. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) singled to load the bases. Patane had a two-run single to left center field scoring Smith and Lugbauer. Martin walked to load the bases once again. Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) then singled through the right side and McAvoy and Patane scored.

UMBC chipped away at the Maine lead the next five innings. The Retrievers scored one in the bottom of the third inning after Brad Brainer doubled and scored on a Will Delawter double. UMBC pulled to within three runs when Steve Retz doubled and scored when Mark Lemon singled in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Retrievers cut the deficit to just one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Scott Peddicord walked and Joe Fowler followed with a home run. UMBC tied the score in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wink Nolan walked and scored when Steve Russo had a RBI single.

 

 

The Black Bears scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn the win. Smith led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to second when Lugbauer singled. Both runners advanced on a balk. Patane drew a walk to load the bases with just one out. Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice and Smith scored. Martin then singled to left field driving in Lugbauer. Jackson followed with his second two-run single of the night giving Maine an 11-7 lead.

The Black Bears were able to retire the side in order in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn the victory.

Matt Jebb (Toronto, Ontario) went 6.1 innings for the Black Bears. He allowed seven runs on 13 hits while striking out seven. Jimmy Cox (Bangor, Maine) relieved Jebb and went 2.2 innings. He allowed just one hit while fanning a pair. He earns the win and improves to 1-0 on the season.

Dan Blewett went six innings for UMBC. He allowed seven runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits while striking out five. Austin Drewyer pitched the final three innings for UMBC and picks up the loss. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits.

The Black Bears will be looking to win the series when the two teams face off on Sunday, April 20 at 1:00 p.m. at The Baseball Factory Field in Baltimore, Md.
