Baseball Falls to UMBC 4-2 in Series Finale

BALTIMORE, Md.-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to UMBC in the series finale on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. Maine falls to 14-18-1 on the season with the loss and 3-5 in America East play. UMBC improves to 12-22 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

UMBC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Scott Peddicord doubled and scored when Will Delawter singled to right field.

Maine tied the game in the top of the third inning. Curt Smith, who finished the day 3-for-4 with a walk, doubled to right field and scored when Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly. The Black Bears took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Smith doubled to left field and scored when Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) doubled down the right field line.

UMBC tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Brad Brainer singled, stole second and scored when Peddicord doubled. The Retrievers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shawn Retz reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second when Tom Meaney walked and scored when Wink Nolan hit a sacrifice fly.

The game was delayed an hour by weather in the bottom of the seventh inning. UMBC added an insurance run on a home run by Will Delawter in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Alejandro Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) got the start for Maine and pitched well. He allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out one batter in the game and falls to 1-4 on the season. Joel Thorney (Toronto, Ontario) relieved Balsinde in the seventh inning. He went two innings and allowed a pair of hits.

 

 

Dave Divita went seven innings for UMBC and allowed two runs on seven hits. He earns the win and improves to 2-4 on the season. Sean Rea pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 22 when they host Thomas College at 5 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.
