Maine Falls to Stony Brook in Series Finale

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team fell to Stony Brook 13-6 on Sunday afternoon in the series finale. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) led the Maine offense as he was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.), Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) each also had a pair of hits. Stony Brook, who improves to 24-16 overall and 11-5 in conference play, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Michael Stephan and Steven Marino each had RBI singles. Maine, who falls to 16-21-1 on the season and 4-8 in America East play, countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Cather reached on an error before Smith belted his 11th home run of the season which hit off the scoreboard in left field. The Seawolves added two runs in the top of the second as Brian Witkowski and Rob Dyer each had RBI singles. The Seawolves added four runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a Witkowski home run. Maine got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Cather singled and Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine), who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, walked. Smith also walked to load the bases. Lugbauer singled to right field scoring Cather. Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) singled up the middle and Lukas scored. Each team added a run in the seventh inning. Chad Marshall had an RBI single for the Seawolves scoring Michael Tansey, while Smith singled and scored on a Kevin McAvoy sacrifice fly. Stony Brook added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth.
Maine countered with one in the bottom of the eighth. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) walked and scored when Lukas singled. The Seawolves capped the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth. Maine's Alejandro Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) picks up the loss. Justin Latta (Lubbock, Texas), Kyle Benoit (Brampton, Ontario), who finished with seven strikeouts, and Will Carroll (Boothbay, Maine) also saw time on the mound for the Black Bears. Jeremy Nowak went seven innings for Stony Brook and earns the victory. Maine is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, April 30 when it host Siena at 4 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond in Orono. -U-M- |
