Baseball to Host Stony Brook in Key America East Series

The University of Maine baseball team hosts Stony Brook in a key America East series this weekend. The Black Bears are 15-18-1 on the season and 3-5 in America East play. Stony Brook is 21-15 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

SCOUTING THE MAINE BLACK BEARS: Maine is led by Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) who is hitting .397 with a team-high 44 runs scored and 24 RBI. He has 10 doubles and leads the team in both home runs with nine and in triples with three. Smith has stolen 10 bases on the season. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) has a .379 batting average with 32 runs scored and a team-high 31 RBI. He leads the team in doubles with 16. Lugbauer also has one triple and four home runs. Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine) is hitting .353 with 15 runs scored and 22 RBI. He has four doubles and four home runs to go along with a pair of triples. Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) is hitting .323 with 32 runs scored and 27 RBI. He has 10 doubles, two triples and three home runs. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) is chipping in with a .315 batting average with nine runs scored and 11 RBI. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) is batting .314 with 22 runs scored and 19 RBI. He leads the team in stolen bases with 13 on the season. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) has a .313 batting average with 12 runs scored and 14 RBI. Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) is hitting .286 with five runs scored and nine RBI. Joe Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y.) has a .268 batting average with 14 runs scored and 12 RBI. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) is chipping in with a .235 batting average with 18 runs scored and 18 RBI. He has eight doubles and eight stolen bases on the season.  The pitching staff is led by Joe Miller (Valley Stream, N.Y.) is 3-2 on the season with a 3.48 ERA. He has 38 strikeouts on the season. Kevin Scanlan (Sudbury, Mass.) is 2-2 on the season with a 3.56 ERA. He has struck out 48 batters on the season. Matt Jebb (Toronto, Ontario) is also 2-2 on the season. He has a 3.83 ERA with a team-high 51 strikeouts. Kyle Benoit (Brampton, Ontario) is 3-1 with a 5.95 ERA.

MAINE COACHING STAFF IN 2008: Maine head coach Steve Trimper (Eastern Connecticut State University '92) returns for his third season at the helm of the Black Bears. He has an overall record of 244-245-4 in his 10th season as a head coach. He has a record of 72-71-2 in his third season with the Black Bears. He is assisted by Jared Holowaty (Eastern Connecticut State University '02), Aaron Izaryk (Maine '05) and Mark Michaud (Eastern Connecticut State University '02).

SCOUTING THE STONY BROOK SEAWOLVES: Stony Brook is 21-15 on the season and 8-4 in America East play. The Seawolves are led by Brian Witkowski who is hitting .371 with 30 runs and 15 RBI. He has 10 doubles, four home runs and leads the team in stolen bases with seven. Steven Mazzurco has a .339 batting average with 17 runs scored and 17 RBI. He has nine doubles on the season. Michael Stephan is hitting .327 with 30 runs scored and 23 RBI. He has a team-high eight home runs on the season. Keith Fier is chipping in with a .319 batting average with 11 runs scored and six RBI. Chad Marshall is batting .311 with 22 runs scored and 17 RBI.  The pitching staff is led by Jeremy Nowak who is 4-1 with a 2.78 ERA. Tom Koehler is 5-2 with a 3.70 ERA. He has struck out 63 batters in 56 innings pitched. Jordan Purington is 3-0 with a 4.34 ERA, while Gary Novakowski is 4-3 with a 4.72 ERA.  Stony Brook is coached by Matt Senk (Cortland `80). He is assisted by Anthony Stutz, Joe Pennucci and Chris Sipp.

MAINE AND STONY BROOK: Maine and Stony Brook have met 30 times with the Seawolves holding a 16-14 lead in the series. Stony Brook took four of the five games between the two teams last year with Maine's lone with coming in the America East Tournament.

SMITH CLOSING IN ON 200: Curt Smith is closing in on 200 games played. He has currently seen action in 196 career games. Danny Menendez is second on the team in games played as he has seen action in 140 career games. Kevin McAvoy has played in 132 career games, while Billy Cather has played in 124 games.

CATHER TIES STOLEN BASES RECORD: Billy Cather tied the Maine record for stolen bases in a game with three on Wednesday, April 16 at Coppin State. It is the 17th time in Maine history that a player has stolen three bases in a game. Cather leads Maine in stolen bases with 13.

CONSECUTIVE GAMES PLAYED: Curt Smith leads all Black Bears, having played in 71 consecutive games dating back to last season. Danny Menendez is second on the team as he has currently seen action in 51 consecutive games.
