Men's Basketball Drops Close Game

ORONO, Maine-- The men's basketball team fell to Boston University Wednesday night in a tight game by the score of 56-49. With the win, BU improved to 6-14 overall and 3-5 in America East play. Maine fell to 6-15 and 2-6 in league play. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) who had 19 points, four rebounds and three assists.Boston University was led by Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ontario) who finished with 20 points.

After Boston University took a quick seven-to-three lead, but big man Brian Andre (Bingham, Maine) had a ferocious dunk that almost brought the hoop down to cut the Terrier lead to two, four minutes into the game.

Boston University went on a run, but Maine came back as Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) got the comeback going with a near-NBA-length three-pointer. He followed that up with a runner even though he got hit in the face in the process. Maine kept battling, and tied the game at 18 with a little over seven minutes to go in the first half after going on a 13-to-two run.

The nicest play of the first half came when Kaimondre Owes (Brooklyn, New York) spun around and made a tough two points with three Terrier defenders all swiping at the ball.

The Terriers took a 31-to-26 lead into the lockerroom and were led by Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ontario) who had 10 points and three rebounds.

Maine out-shot Boston University in the first as the Black Bears made 50 percent of their shots from the field to the Terriers' 46 percent. The teams had 14 rebounds apiece in the first stanza.

Maine was led in the first half by Socoby who had 12 points, two rebounds and two assists in 20 minutes of first half action. McNally was also active as he had five points and five rebounds in the first stanza.

 

 

The Black Bears went on a nine-to-four run to start the second half and tie the game at 35 with 11 minutes to go in the game on a Junior Bernal (Manhattan, New York) jumper.

The Terriers went on a run, and had an eight-point lead with just under six minuted to go, but the Black Bears came back to get within two with only three minutes to go in the game on a McNally layup.

Maine continued to battle hard, but the Terriers made free throws down the stretch to put the game just out of reach for the Black Bears.

McNally finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Bernal finished with 10 points and three assists.

Maine shot 47 percent for the game on 18-of-38 shooting while Boston University went 20-for-47 and 42 percent. Maine out-rebounded the Terriers by a 29-to-24 margin.

The Black Bears return to action on Feb. 6 when they travel to Hartford for a 7 pm game.
