Men's Basketball Falls to Binghamton
Feb. 17, 2008 VESTAL, New York--The men's basketball team fell to Binghamton Sunday afternoon by the score of 80-55. With the win, Binghamton improved to 12-14 overall and 8-6 in America East. Maine fell to 7-18 and 3-9 in America East. Maine was led by Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) and Kaimondre Owes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who had 15 points each. Dwayne Jackson (Akron, Ohio) led Binghamton with 26 points. In the first half, both teams got off to a relatively slow start, but Maine had a one-point advantage at five-to-four, more than eight minutes into the game. The teams went back and forth, and were tied at 12 with just under eight minutes to go as Sean Costigan (South Portland, ME.) drained a three-pointer from the corner. The defensive play in the first half came as Binghamton's Richard Forbes was coasting in for a layup but Malachi Peay (Queens, N.Y.) came out of nowhere to swat it away with authority. The Bearcats went on a 23-to-four run to end the first half, and took a 35-16 lead into halftime. Maine was led in the first half by Mark Socoby (Houlton, ME.) who had six points, two rebounds and two assists, while Troy Barnies (Auburn, ME.) had three points and three rebounds. Lazar Trifunovic (Belgrade, Serbia) led Binghamton with eight points and four rebounds in the first stanza. Binghamton out-rebounded Maine 18-to-14 while also shooting 43 percent to the Black Bears' 28 percent. Owes had a nice play in the early stages of the second half as he cut between two Binghamton defenders, made the layup and got fouled. Owes made the ensuing free throw to cut into the Binghamton lead. Maine continued to battle hard, but could get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
The Black Bears were without four players who played regularly that were missing due to injury. Coach Woodward and his staff wore sneakers as part of Binghamton's Coaches Vs. Cancer weekend. For the second consecutive game, five Black Bear freshmen played solid minutes. The Black Bears return to action on Feb. 20 when they travel to take on the Terriers of Boston University at 8 p.m. |
