Men's Basketball Falls to UMBC

ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine men's basketball team dropped a tough decisioin to UMBC Thursday night by the score of 85-68. With the win, UMBC improved to 21-7 and 13-2 in America East. The Black Bears fell to 7-21 and 3-12 in league play. Maine was led by Mark Socoby (Houlton, ME.) who had a great all-around game with 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. UMBC was led by Ray Barbosa (Allentown, Pa.) who had 31 points, five rebounds and five assists In the first half, the Retrievers got off to a hot start, taking an 11-to-two lead after making four out of their first five shots. Senior Brian Andre (Bingham, ME.) stopped the run with a rim-rattling dunk, and after Owes made a jumper, the lead was cut to six points. The Retrievers proceeded to go on a run, and led 32-to19 with just under four minutes to go in the first half. The Black Bears then went on run themselves as Phil Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon) entered the game for the Black Bears and immediately scored seven straight points to cut the lead to just six points with two minutes to go. After a couple of Jordan Cook (Hampden, Maine) free throws, the Black Bears got the ball back for the last possession of the first half. Kaimondre Owes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a tough three-pointer and was fouled by Jay Greene (Whitehall, Pa.). Owes made the ensuing free throw to tie the game at 32, which capped a 13-to-nothing run for Maine and tied the game going into halftime. The Black Bears were led in the first half by Owes' 15 points and Tchekane Bofia's seven points. Socoby grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists in the first stanza.
Barbosa had 13 points for the Retrievers in the first half. The second half got off to a back and forth start as Maine eventually took a one-point lead. The Retrievers went on a run, and took a 14-points lead with a little over 14 minutes left in the second half. The Black Bears continued to battle hard, but the veteran Retrievers made a few too many shots to overcome. The Retrievers shot 57 percent from the field while Maine shot 42 percent. The Black Bears out-rebounded the Retrievers by a 34-to-31 margin. Andre pitched in with 15 points and five rebounds while Owes ended up with 17 points. Freshman Sean Costigan (South Portland, ME.) set a career-high with eight points and played solid defense all night. Greene finished with 11 points and 14 assists for UMBC. The game was Senior Night, and seniors Andre and Pat Woodbrey (Raymond, Maine) were honored before the game. Maine returns to action on Sunday afternoon when the Black Bears travel to take on the Vermont Catamounts at 1 pm in their regular season finale. -U-M- |
