Feb. 11, 2008

ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine men's basketball player Mark Socoby was named the America East Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 24.5 points and eight rebounds in games against Hartford and New Hampshire last week. Socoby, a sophomore guard from Houlton, Maine, shot 50 percent from the field while also shooting 45 percent from three-point range for the week.

At Hartford, Socoby had 20 points, six rebounds, three steals and a block. In the overtime victory at New Hampshire, Socoby had 29 points and 10 rebounds, and had the game-tying free throw at the end of regulation. In overtime he had the key layup and free throw at the end of the session to preserve the win for the Black Bears.

Socoby is leading Maine in scoring at 14.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, respectively.

This is the second time a men's basketball player has been honored by America East this season as Sean McNally was named the Rookie of the Week on Dec. 26.

The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, Feb. 14 when they take on the Albany Great Danes for a 7 p.m. game in the Alfond Arena. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased by calling 581-BEAR or toll-free at (800) 756-TEAM.
