Men's Basketball Announces Spring Recruits

May 7, 2008

ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine men's basketball head coach Ted Woodward announced today the spring recruiting class of Svetoslav Chetinov, Doran Mitchell, Andrew Rogers and Ryan Martin. Chetinov is a 6-9 forward/center from MCI, Mitchell is a 6-0 guard from St. Thomas More Prep School in Connecticut, Rogers is a 5-9 point guard from Archbishop Ryan in Philadelphia and Martin is a 5-8 guard from Maranacook.

Chetinov, from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, was a key starter on coach Dave Campbell's MCI post-graduate roster this winter. His size and skill level bring strength and interior scoring to the Black Bears.

"Svetoslav will be a freshman that can step in and help our physical presence in the post,"said coach Woodward. "He has great size (250 lbs), and a skill set developed in Europe that allows great versatility. Playing for coach Campbell at MCI was a great experience for him and helped him adjust to the American game. He is also an outstanding and serious student who is interested in mechanical engineering here at the University. We look forward to his career with us."

Mitchell, from Berlin, Conn., just completed a postgraduate year at St. Thomas More Prep School where he started for the Chancellors and coach Jere Quinn.

"Doran is a student-athlete we have followed since his senior year of high school right through prep school," said Woodward. He is a guard that can control the ball, push a team, and distribute and score. He is a tremendous offensive talent and comes highly recommended from coach Quinn."

Mitchell averaged over 28 points per game at Berlin High School during his senior year in Connecticut, and led the Redcoats to the Connecticut State Championship in 2006 as a junior. Former Maine standout Kevin Reed is also a St. Thomas More alum.

Rogers, from Philadelphia, Pa., was the point guard for an Archbishop Ryan team that finished as runners-up in the highly competitive Catholic League. Rogers was named league MVP.

"Andrew has had a phenomenal high school career and has recieved numerous accolades for his accomplishments," Woodward said. "He is a pure point guard who sees the floor, is a very tough competitor, and is a floor general. Furthermore, he is an outstanding student who will thrive at Maine." Rogers plans to study kinesiology and physical education at Maine.

Martin, from Readfield, Maine, was the 2008 Maine Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year after leading Maranacook to an undefeated season, culminating in Maranacook winning its second state champsionship in three years. Martin was a three-time All-Maine selection.

"Ryan had a tremendous high school career and is looking to continue his outstanding play as he enters the college ranks," said Woodward. "He has a high basketball IQ, has been a very productive player throughout his high school career, and has a tremendous love for the game."

The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA clearinghouse.
