Matthew Mulligan Signs Rookie Free Agent Deal with the Miami Dolphins

May 2, 2008

ORONO, Maine - University of Maine senior tight end Matthew Mulligan recently signed a rookie free agent deal with the NFL's Miami Dolphins. Mulligan joins former teammate Anthony Cotrone as the two Black Bears to sign rookie free agent deals with NFL teams during the past week. Cotrone agreed to a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier in the week.

Mulligan started at tight end the last two seasons for Maine. As a senior in 2007, Mulligan caught 13 passes for 157 yards (12.1 ypc) and two touchdowns. His 13 receptions and average per catch ranked third and second, respectively, on the team.

Mulligan also proved to be a strong and physical blocker in the running game for Maine, as he helped pave the way for the Black Bears to finish fourth in the CAA in rushing each of the last two seasons.

With Mulligan's signing, it marks the fourth-straight year that multiple Black Bears have either been drafted or signed by NFL teams. Since 2005, 11 Black Bears have earned their way to an NFL team's minicamp or training camp.

In addition to Mulligan and Cotrone, a third Black Bear signed a professional football contract within the last week as Matt King inked a deal with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL. King last played at Maine during the 2006 season.
