Doyle, Howard Finalists for Yanick Dupre Award
April 1, 2008
ORONO, Maine - The American Hockey League recently announced the team winners of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year Awards. Former Maine goaltenders Jimmy Howard and Frank Doyle were each named the recipient of their individual teams. The award is given to a player from each AHL team for his outstanding contributions to his local community and charitable organizations throughout the 2007-08 season. Both Howard and Doyle are now finalists for the 2007-08 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award as the AHL's Man of the Year. The AHL Man of the Year award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who died in 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre, an AHL All-Star in 1995, played four seasons with the Hershey Bears, registering 169 points in 207 AHL games. Howard has played the 2007-08 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He has earned five call-ups to the Detroit Red Wings this season. With the Griffins, he is 20-26 with a 2.82 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. Howard has started the Howard's Heros program, in which he purchases four season tickets and donates them to the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. Howard is also involved in a number of other community service events with the Griffins. Doyle has played the 2007-08 season with the Lowell Devils. Doyle has a team-high 13 wins on the season and has a 3.15 goals against average and a .898 save percentage. Doyle, like Howard, has also been involved in numerous community service projects in the Lowell area. The winner of the 2007-08 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced in the coming weeks. -U-M-
