Track and Field Competes at America East Championships
May 4, 2008 ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track teams competed in the final day at the America East Champisonhips hosted by the University of Maine on Sunday. Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick) was named the outstanding female track performer of the meet after winning the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and anchoring the winning 4x400 meter relay team. The men's team placed sixth while the women came in fifth. On the women's side, Howatt's memorable America East Championships consisted of winning the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.96, taking the 200 meter dash in a time of 24.17 and anchoring the 4x400 meter relay team that won in a time of 3:50.19. Joining Howatt on the relay team was Vicki Tolton (Smithers, British Columbia), Vanessa Letourneau (Fairfield, Maine) and Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine). Tolton won the 400 meter run in a time of 55.94 and as followed closely by Burlock. Other top performers included Letourneau finishing sixth in the 800 meter run, Tanya Simard (North Bay, Ontario) placing fifth in the long jump, Rebecca Even (Stoneham, Mass.) placing second in the hammer throw and Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) taking sixth in the hammer throw. Boston University won the women's championship with 193 points. The terrier were followed by new Hampshire with 119.5 points, Albany (116.5), UMBC (96) and Maine (84.5). Binghamton took sixth with 80.5 points, followed by Vermont (65), Stony Brook (60) and Hartford (41). On the men's side, Jeff Ramos (Turner, Maine) won the high jump with a leap of 6-6 while Matt Holman took first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.15.
Other top performers included Skip Edwards (Portland, Maine) taking second in the 400 meter dash, Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) placing fifth in the 800 meter run, Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine) finishing third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the 4x400 meter relay team of Edwards, Holman, Travis Cook (Raymond, Maine) and Dan Voner (Hallowell, Maine) taking third, Justin Averill (South Portland, Maine) finishing fifth in the discus and Dan Poirier taking second in the javelin. The Albany men won the championship with 196 points, followed by New Hampshire (162), Binghamton (119), and Boston University (115.5). UMBC took fifth with 93.5 points, Maine (64), Stony Brook (55), Vermont (39) and Hartford (13) rounded out the rest of the championship. The Black Bears return to the track on Friday at the New England Championships at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. |
