Women's Ice Hockey Falls Just Short to BU 4-3
Jan. 27, 2008 BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey team dropped a game Sunday afternoon to Boston University by a score of 4-3. Maine fell to 2-19-3 and 1-7-3 in Hockey East while Boston University improved to 8-11-3 and 5-5-1 in Hockey East. In the first period, BU got on the board. With 37 seconds remaining, Laurel Koller slipped one past Maine goaltender Geneveieve Turgeon for her sixth goal of the season. Melissa Anderson and Sarah Appleton assisted on the power play goal. But that was all the action in the first period as the teams were even on shots 10-10. In the second period, BU took a two goal lead when Gina Kearns scored 7:13 into the period. Kelley Karnan and Melissa Tetreau assisted on the play. The Terriers went up 3-0 almost three minutes later when Lauren Cherewyk scored. Kearns and Jillian Kirchner assisted on the play at 9:57 into the period. Maine finally got on the board with 5:14 to play when junior Vanessa Vani shot one past BU goaltender Melissa Haber. Freshman Jennie Gallo assisted on the play. A goal filled second period ended with BU in the lead 3-1. Maine outshot the Terriers 13-11 in the period. In the third period, Maine pulled another one back when sophomore Taryn Peacock scored her fifth goal of the season at 6:06 into the period. Vanessa Vani assisted on the play. Maine pulled their goalie late in the period and the strategy didn't work. Caroline Bourdeau scored the empty-netter for the Terriers making it 4-2. It was the first empty net goal let up by the Black Bears all season. But even with little time left the Black Bears wouldn't say die. With 11 seconds remaining, sophomore Abby Barton scored with the extra attacker making it 4-3. Taryn Peacock and Vanessa Vani assisted on the play. The teams again were even on shots 6-6.
Maine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon totalled 23 saves in the game. Boston University goaltender Melissa Haber tallied 26 saves. Turgeon went to 2-13-3 on the season while Haber went to 2-4-1. Maine was 0-for-3 on the power play while Boston University went 1-for-6. Maine returns home next weekend to host rival New Hampshire for a two-game set. The puck drops at 7pm on Sat., Feb. 2 and at 2pm the next day. --UM-- |
