Women's Ice Hockey Falls to UNH 9-1

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey team dropped a game Saturday night to New Hampshire by a score of 9-1. Maine fell to 2-20-3 and 1-8-3 in Hockey East while New Hampshire improved to 22-3-1 and 12-0-1 in Hockey East. Maine goaltender Geneveieve Turgeon moved into second place on the all-time career saves list with a mark of 1,744. She surpassed Lara Smart's career mark of 1,710.

In the first period, Maine got on the board first. Sophomore Abby Barton shot a rebound past UNH goaltender Kayley Herman for her fourth goal of the season. Pam Patterson and Taryn Peacock assisted on the goal at 10:10 into the period. With 1:08 remaining, UNH tied it up. Leah Craig scored her seventh goal of the season assisted by Sadie Wright-Ward and Martine Garland. Almost a minute later, UNH made it 2-1 when Sam Faber scored on the power play from Jenn Wakefield and Steph Holmes. UNH outshot Maine 17-5 in the period.

In the second period, UNH broke out. Leah Craig scored her second goal of the game and eighth of the year 9:50 into the period. Wright-Ward and Garland assisted on the play. UNH scored 50 seconds later when Jenn Wakefield scored her 15th goal of the season from Sam Faber andGarland. UNH outshot the Black Bears 14-4 in the period.

In the third period, UNH pulled away. Jennifer Hitchock scored her 14th goal of the season 2:15 into the period. Kacey Bellamy assisted on the play. Micaela Long score her eighth goal of the season at 10:23 on the powerplay. Garland and Craig assisted. Jenn Wakefield scored her second of the game at 11:44 into the period from Sam Faber. Sadie Wright-Ward got an unassisted goal at 11:56 into the period. And Stefanie Marty scored her first collegiate goal to finish off the Wildcats' nine goals in the game. Bellamy and Garland assisted on the play. Craig and Wakefield ended with two goals each. Martine Garland ended with a career high five assists and her 100th career point.

 

 

Maine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon totalled 37 saves in the game. New Hampshire goaltender Kayley Herman tallied 16 saves. Turgeon went to 2-14-3 on the season while Herman went to 20-2-1. Maine was 0-for-6 on the power play while New Hampshire went 3-for-6.

Maine faces New Hampshire again tomorrow at 2pm in the Alfond.
