Women's Ice Hockey Splits Weekend With Northeastern With 4-2 Win
Feb. 9, 2008 BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey team won Saturday night against Northeastern by a score of 4-2. Maine improved to 3-22-3 and 2-10-3 in Hockey East while Northeastern fell to 6-18-3 and 5-9-1 in Hockey East. The Black Bears won the season series 2-1 against the Huskies. The Black Bears are undefeated when scoring four goals or more in a game. In the first period, Maine got on the board first. Sophomore Lexie Hoffmeyer shot the puck past Northeastern goaltender Leah Sulyma and straight into the net for her third goal of the season. The power play goal was scored with 5:54 remaining in the period and was assisted by freshman Danielle Cyr and sophomore Taryn Peacock. It was Cyr's first collegeiate point. Maine went up 2-0 in the first when senior assistant captain Kim Meagher scored her first goal of the season off a pass from classmate Pam Patterson. The goal was scored with 2:48 remaining in the period. The Black Bears outshot the Huskies 12-11 in the period. In the second period, Maine continued to pour it on. Junior Vanessa Vani scored what ended up being the game winning goal at 6:41 into the period. The goal was scored shorthanded and was assisted by Pam Patterson. Patterson amassed three points on the weekend with her two assists tonight and her goal in last night's game. Sophomore Amy Stech added to the Black Bears' lead with 7:51 remaining in the period. Vani assisted on the play. The Black Bears outshot Northeastern in the period 15-11. In the third period, Northeastern tried to mount a comeback. 5:37 into the period, Chelsey Jones stopped Maine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon's shutout bid with her 10th goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Katy Applin. Jones scored again almost a minute later 6:32 into the period for her 11th goal. Ginny Berg assisted on that goal. But that would be it as the Black Bears won their second Hockey East game of the season, both coming against Northeastern.
Maine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon totalled 36 saves in the game. Northeastern goaltender Leah Sulyma tallied 27 saves. Turgeon went to 3-15-3 on the season while Sulyma went to 6-15-3. Maine was 1-for-4 on the power play while Northeastern went 0-for-4. Maine comes back home next weekend for a two game set with Boston College. Saturday night's game will be the Skating Strides for Breast Cancer event. All Women's Hockey East teams will be wearing pink jerseys, pink laces and playing with pink sticks. 100% of all proceeds will be donated to breast cancer charities. The game starts at 7pm. Sunday's game will start at 2pm. --UM-- |
