Women's Ice Hockey Drops Close One to UConn 5-4

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey team dropped a 5-4 decision Sunday afternoon against Connecticut. Maine fell to 4-25-3 and 3-13-3 in Hockey East while UConn improved to 22-5-5 and 13-3-3 in Hockey East.

In the first period, Connecticut got on the board first. Cristin Allen scored 5:39 into the period for her fourth goal of the season. She was assisted on the power play goal by Dominique Thibault and Samantha Reid. Maine got even though when Pam Patterson scored at 10:01 into the period. Her third goal of the season was assisted by Jordan Colliton and Abby Barton. The first period finished with the scores level at 1-1. Maine outshot UConn in the period 15-5.

In the second period, UConn pulled away. Dominique Thibault scored the Huskies' second power play goal of the game 43 seconds into the period. Cristin Allen and Jaclyn Hawkins assisted on Thibault's 23rd goal of the season. Maine pulled even again with a score from freshman Jordan Colliton. Her third goal of the season was scored 4:35 into the period assisted by Pam Patterson and Abby Barton. Jennifer Chiasson pulled the Huskies ahead again with her sixth of the season, and UConn's third power play goal of the game. The goal was scored with 7:24 remaining assisted by Jaclyn Hawkins and Bridget King. Chiasson scored again with 5:51 remaining for her seventh goal of the season. Hawkins and Dominique Thibault assisted on the power play goal to make it four for the game for the Huskies. The Huskies outshot Maine 17-8 in the period.

In the third period, Maine attempted a comeback. Robyn Law scored her third of the season at 3:09 into the period. Jennie Gallo and Vanessa Vani assisted on the goal. Jaclyn Hawkins scored the evenutal game winner at 9:16 into the period. Her 14th goal of the season was assisted by Dominique Thibault and Liz Gallinaro. But Maine wouldn't say die and Taryn Peacock scored with 1:04 remaining to pull within one goal. The extra attacker goal was her sixth of the season and was assisted by Jennie Gallo and Vanessa Vani. But that was all she wrote and UConn snuck away with a 5-4 win. The Black Bears outshot the Huskies in the period 7-5.

 

 

Maine goaltender Sarah Bishop totalled 22 saves in the game. Connecticut goaltender Brittany Wilson totalled 26 saves. Bishop went to 0-8-0 on the season while Wilson went to 16-4-4. Maine was 1-for-5 on the power play while Connecticut went 4-for-9.

Maine will return home next weekend to face Vermont for the final two games of the season.
