Genevieve Turgeon Named Best Defensive Player for Fifth Time

WAKEFIELD, Mass. - For the fifth week so far this season, University of Maine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon was named Hockey East's Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week. Turgeon stopped 45 out of 46 shots in Saturday's game against BU with 18 saves coming in the first period alone. She tallied 68 saves on the weekend with a save percentage of .944 and a GAA of 1.93. Turgeon has five weekly awards and one monthly award so far this season. Turgeon is in the Top 5 in every Career Goaltending record at UMaine. She's third in games played with 62 behind Lara Smart who tallied 63 in her career at UMaine. She surpassed Rachel Gettings and Dawn Froats already this season, both of whom had 52. She's fifth in wins with 17 behind Smart's 19. She's also third in save percentage with .903 behind Lara Smart who recorded a career mark of .917. Turgeon tied Gettings for fourth all-time with six career shutouts. Froats tallied eight and Smart had seven in their respective careers at UMaine. She's fifth in goals against averag with a mark of 3.07. Dawn Froats owns fourth place with a mark of 2.58. With the 68 saves this past week, Turgeon moved closer to second on the all-time saves record list with a total of 1,707. She just needs four more saves to surpass Smart for second place. Smart recorded 1,710 saves between 2000-2004. Turgeon has passed Dawn Froats already this season for third. Froats totaled 1,096 saves from 1999-2003. Turgeon is also moving up on the Single Season Goaltending record books already this season. With the 68 saves this past week she's inched closer to third all time with 641 saves this season. Her own mark of 682 saves last season is third all time. Genevieve is a junior finance and international business major at UMaine. Before UMaine, she played for Limoilou College and left with a three season record of 32-14-3. She is originally from Lac Beauport, Quebec, Canada.
