Genevieve Turgeon Named Best Defensive Player for Sixth Time

Feb. 18, 2008

WAKEFIELD, Mass. - For the sixth week this season, University of Maine junior goaltender Genevieve Turgeon was named Hockey East's Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week. Turgeon stopped 80 out of 83 shots in Maine's two games against Boston College this weekend with 39 coming in the first game and 41 coming in the second. She had a save percentage of .964 and a GAA of 1.46 on the weekend. Turgeon has six weekly awards and one monthly award so far this season.

Turgeon has broken two school records so far this season. She broke the record for career saves in last weekend against Northeastern. Amanda Cronin was the previous recordholder with 1,757 from 1998-2002. This past weekend, Turgeon broke the school record for games played by a goaltender. The previous record was held by Cronin as well with 66 in her four years at Maine.

Turgeon is in the Top 5 for ever other career goaltending record at Maine. She tied Lara Smart this weekend for fourth in all-time wins with her win over Boston College. They both have 19. Dawn Froats holds the record with 28 from 1999-2003. She is third in save percentage with .903 and fifth in goals against average with a mark of 3.10.

Turgeon is also moving up on the Single Season Goaltending record books already this season. With the 80 saves this past weekend she's inched closer to the all time record with 826 saves so far this season. Lara Smart's 03-04 mark of 895 is first all-time.

Genevieve is a junior finance and international business major at UMaine. Before UMaine, she played for Limoilou College and left with a three season record of 32-14-3. She is originally from Lac Beauport, Quebec, Canada.
