Softball Falls in Doubleheader
March 14, 2008 HONOLULU, Hawai'i- The University of Maine softball team dropped two tough decisions to a couple of national powers in a Thursday doubleheader. The Black Bears lost to North Carolina 7-1 and fell to Hawai'i 6-3. With the losses, Maine fell to 0-22 on the season. Maine was led by Alexis Souhlaris (Derry, N.H.) and Ashley Waters (Amesbury, Mass.) who each had a homerun on the day. In the first game against North Carolina, the Tar Heels scored two runs in each of the first three innings to take a six run lead. The Tar Heels scored another run in the top of the seventh before the Black Bears got on the board. Waters started the inning off with a single followed by a walk from Terren Hall (Bucksport, Maine). After a passed ball allowed the runners to advance, Stephanie George (Seekonk, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Waters. Christine McGiveny (Burr Ridge, Ill.) took the loss and her record fell to 0-4 on the season. Cayleigh Montano (La Cruces, N.M.) came in and pitched four strong innings only giving up one earned run on five hits, while striking out four. The Tar Heels were led by Brittany McKinney (Clemmons, N.C.) who went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Amber Johnson won the game for North Carolina, and her record improved to 4-1. In the nightcap against Hawai'i, the Rainbows scored three runs in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to take a six run lead. However, the Black Bears came right back in the sixth. Jordan McLain (Orrington, Maine) had a pinch-hit single up the middle to get things started. Erin Iandoli (Worcester, Mass.) advanced McLain with a sacrifice bunt which brought Souhlaris to the plate. Souhlaris smacked a homerun to left field, scoring two. Waters followed Souhlaris' lead, and hit another home run to close the Rainbow lead to just three. The homerun was Waters' fourth of the season.
Jenna Balent (Conifer, Colo.) pitched the complete game as her record fell to 0-7 on the season. Hawai'i was led by Clare Warwick (Canberra, A.C.T., Australia) who went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Kate Robinson (Honolulu, Hawai'i) got the win and improved her record to 8-3. Maine returns to action on Friday when the Black Bears take on the University of Texas at 5 p.m. (E.S.T). |
