Softball Falls to Texas
March 14, 2008 HONOLULU, Hawai'i- The University of Maine softball team dropped a tough game to the University of Texas by the score of 7-2. With the loss, the Black Bears fell to 0-23 on the season while the Longhorns improved to 13-10-1. Ashley Waters (Amesbury, Mass.) continued her solid play of late, collecting two hits including a homerun. The Longhorns got two runs in the first and five runs in the second to take a seven run lead. Maine got back a run in the fourth Kristen Calvetti's (Milford, N.H.) smart base running. Calvetti was on first when she advanced on a wild pitch. When Courtney Gingrich (Lititz, Pa.) singled through the left side Calvetti hustled to third. Erin Iandoli (Worcester,, Mass.) put the ball in play and the Texas third baseman made an error allowing Calvetti to put the Black Bears on the board. Maine got another run in the seventh when Waters hit her team-leading fifth homerun of the season to left center field. Alexis Souhlaris (Derry, N.H.) had a good day as she went 2-for-4. Cayleigh Montano (La Cruces, N.M.) took the loss and her record fell to 0-4. Jenna Balent (Conifer, Colo.) pitched 4.2 innings of strong relief, giving up only one earned run and one walk while striking out four. The Black Bears continue play on Saturday at 3 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
