Softball Swept by Providence in Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Maine softball team was swept by Providence in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I. The Black Bears dropped both games by scores of 10-3 and 7-6. Maine fell to 0-26 on the season.

In game one, Ashley Waters went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Black Bears, while Terren Hall blasted her third home run of the season and drove in a pair of runs. Jenna Balent got the start in the pitching circle for Maine and suffered the loss after going 3.0 innings and yielding five runs on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts.

The Black Bears battled hard in game two and almost pulled out the win. The game went back-and-forth, but saw Maine trailing 6-3 following the fourth inning. The Black Bears answered in the top of the fifth and pushed three runs across the plate to knot the score at 6-6. Maine's three-run rally was keyed by RBI singles from Erin Iandoli, Whitney Spangler and Alexis Souhlaris.

However, the Friars scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom half of the frame as Jenna Garcia drove in a run on her sacrifice fly out to center field.

The game winning run came off Black Bear relief pitcher Cayleigh Montano. Despite the suffering the loss, Montano turned in a solid relief appearance, as she yielded just one run on four hits with a strikeout and no walks in 2.1 innings of work.

Spangler, Iandoli, Jordan McLain and Kristen Calvetti each doubled in the contest. Spangler and Iandoli each drove in a pair of runs in the contest for Maine.

 

 

Christine McGivney got the start in the pitching circle for Maine in game two and worked 3.2 innings, while allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks.

Maine returns to action Thursday when it travels to Cambridge, Mass., to take on Harvard.
