Softball Downs Stony Brook in Extra Innings on Sunday

March 30, 2008

Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine softball team downed Stony Brook, 8-6, in 12 innings on Sunday for its second win in the last three games. The Black Bears ran their record 2-29 on the season and 2-1 in America East. The Black Bears scored a combined 20 runs in the three-game series, which was played at University Field in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Freshman third baseman Terren Hall was the offensive catalyst on the day for Maine as she went 4-for-6, including two home runs, with five runs driven in and a pair of runs scored. Ashley Waters had a pair of hits, as both Hall and Waters now share the team lead for homers with five.

Jenna Balent got the start in the pitching circle for Maine and worked the initial four innings, but was pulled in the fifth in favor of Cayleigh Montano. Montano worked the ensuing five innings and yielded five runs on eight hits. Balent came back in to pitch the crucial 10th-12th innings. Overall, Balent worked seven innings to earn the win as she gave up just one run on six hits with five strikeouts.

Stony Brook jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Kelsi Fanelli. However, Maine answered with the game's next six runs, including a five-run outburst in the third inning. Whitney Spangler brought in the frame's first three runs with a double to right center, which plated Alexis Souhlaris, Stephanie George and Jordan McLain. Hall capped the scoring two batters later when she deposited a pitch over the outfield wall for a two-run shot, bringing home Spangler. The Black Bears added to their advantage in the fifth with a Hall RBI single to put Maine up 6-1.

The Seawolves responded in the bottom half of the frame as they put a five spot up on the board to knot the contest at 6-6. The big play of the inning was a Molly Kestranek grand slam.

The game went scoreless over the next six innings before Maine broke through with the two game-winning runs in the 12th. The two runs came off the bat of Hall, who blasted her second home run of the game. The two-run shot plated Waters on the play, who singled the at-bat before Hall came to the plate. Balent kept Stony Brook at bay in the bottom of the 12th to nail down the win for her first of the season.
