Nov. 8, 2008

Results

Orono, Maine - The University of Maine swimming and diving team lost to visiting Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bear women's team suffered a narrow defeat, 151-149, as they drop to 2-2 on the season. Maine's men's team fell 174-118 to the Seawolves as they slide to 1-1 on the season. The Black Bears were led by Kerstin Fenton (Dixon, Calif.) who won both the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events and was a member of the first place 200 yard medley relay team.

Women's swimming and diving broke out to a great start when Fenton, Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine), Megan McLean (Walpole, Mass.) and Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) combined for a 1:52.29 time on the 200 yard medley relay team that nabbed first place. Hahn, a freshman, later claimed first in the 200 yard backstroke with a 2:10.49 time as well. Maine picked up several points from the diving board as junior Samantha Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) continued her stellar season by finishing in first in both the one- and three-meter dive, with scores of 221.32 and 214.27, respectively. The Black Bears looked to be out of contention before Mackenzie Grobmyer (Charlottesville, Va.) took first with a photo finish in the 200 yard I.M., winning by 00.01 seconds. Maine's women ultimately fell by two overall points, but showed a great deal of heart in the loss.

The Black Bear men's team battled hard and saw several standout performances, but fell to the Seawolves. Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) finished first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 52.38 in the men's only individual event win. Captain John Quinn (Bangor, Maine), Jamie Young (Richboro, Pa.), Kevin Staples (Mt. Desert, Maine) and Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine) combined for a 3:18.80 time in the 400 yard freestyle relay that landed them first place in the meet's final event. Quinn also came in second only moments earlier in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.88. First year diver Stephen Kelley (Gray, Maine) continues to improve as he took second place in both the one- and three-meter dive with scores of 170.47 and 163.95, respectively.

The Maine swimming and diving teams return as they travel to Burlington on Saturday, November 15, to take on Vermont and Keene State starting at 12 pm.
