Track and Field Competes at America East Championships

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track teams competed at the America East Champisonhips hosted by the University of Maine on Saturday. After the first day of competition, the men are in fourth place while the women are in fifth. On the women's side, Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick) had a first and second place finish in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash, respectively, in the preliminary rounds. Vicki Tolton (Smithers, British Columbia) and Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) placed first and second, repectively, in the preliminary round of the 400 meter dash. Allyson Thomas (Auburn, Maine) placed fourth in the pole vault, Rebecca Even (Stoneham, Mass.) placed second in the hammer throw while Micralyn Wiechman placed sixth in the hammer throw. Boston University leads the women's Championshps with 56 points, followed by New Hampshire (42), Binghamton (27.5), Albany (27) and Maine (23.5). UMBC is in sixth with 22 points, followed by Stony Brook with 18 and Vermont with 17. On the men's side, Jeff Ramos(Turner, Maine) is the 2008 America East champion in the high jump with a leap of 6-6. Other top performers included Skip Edwards (Portland, Maine) who was fourth in the preliminary of the 400 meter dash and qualified for tomorrow's final. Matt Holman (Gardiner, Maine) was the top qualifier in the 400 meter dash, Dan Poirier (Lewiston, Maine) was runner-up in the javelin while teammate Andrew Loring (Bangor, Maine) took fifth.
New Hampshire leads the men's Championships after the first day with 75 points, followed by Albany (60), Binghamton (42) and Maine (29). Bostonb University is in fifth with 23.5 points, with UMBC (17.5), Stony Brook (10), Hartford (10) and Vermont (six) rounding out the field. The America East Champsionships continue tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the completion of the decathlon and heptathlon events. The women's 4x100 meter relay begins the day's other events at 11 a.m. |
