Milwaukee -- Marquette University recognized the accomplishments of its 2007-08 men's basketball program at the team's annual awards banquet Thursday night, held at the Alumni Memorial Union on campus.

A total of 10 players shared the 12 awards announced at the event. Junior Jerel McNeal was called to the podium a total of three times to lead the squad, while sophomore Lazar Hayward claimed two plaques.

McNeal was named the team's Most Valuable Performer following a season that saw him average 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. An All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, McNeal carried the team offensively in the postseason. As a result, he was named to the all-tourney squad at the league championship. McNeal also claimed the Deflection King Award and the Olouma Nnamaka Consistency Award.

Hayward enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2007-08, earning All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades in the process. Only two players improved their scoring average more from 2006-07 than Hayward, who paced the team in rebounding (6.5 rpg.). The Buffalo, N.Y., native was named MU's Chairman of the Boards for his efforts and also captured the Most Improved Player Award.

Junior Wesley Matthews topped the roster in charity toss attempts and makes to earn the Free Throw Proficiency Award. Matthews shot .790 (132-167) from the line for the year, including an impressive 93.5 percent (43-of-46) over the course of the last eight games. Classmate Dominic James dished out 154 assists to rank among the league leaders.
