MILWAUKEE - Marquette University opened the spring portion of its 2007-08 men's golf season Friday at the Ron Smith/USF Invitational held at the par-72, 7,084-yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla. The Golden Eagles, led by junior Mike Van Sickle, currently sit in seventh place in the 18-team event following the first of three rounds. Van Sickle shot an even-par 72 and is tied for ninth place overall. The defending tournament champion got off to a slow start with four bogeys on his first five holes. Van Sickle fired back, however, with three pars and a birdie on the back nine before carding three more birdies to finish his round. Freshman Kelly Kretz also rallied from a slow start. Kretz, like Van Sickle, posted four birdies on the day, including three birdies in his final four holes to move to a two-over 74. Senior Ted Gray finished with a 75, one stroke behind Kretz. Junior Dustin Schwab struggled down the stretch, but finished with a 76 and senior Michael Bielawski rounded out the squad with a 77. Friday's individual leader was Rafael Campos of VCU, who posted a seven-under 65, and Middle Tennessee State boasts a four-stroke lead over Campos' Rams with a team score of 287. Marquette is currently 10 strokes off the lead at 297. Today's round was pushed back to 8:45 a.m. CST due to a frost delay. Tee times for Saturday have not yet been released. The tournament will conclude Sunday. Ron Smith/USF Invitational
