Marquette Struggles In Opening Round At Pinehurst

MILWAUKEE - Marquette University opened first round action with a 314 at the 2008 Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade on Sunday. The three-day event is being held at the challenging par 72, 7,092-yard Centennial No. 8 Course at the famed Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C. With two rounds remaining, the Golden Eagles currently sit in 14th place overall in the 19-team field. Senior Ted Gray paced the MU squad, which has boasted five top-3 finishes in six tournaments this season, with a four-over par 76. Gray is tied for 18th on the individual leaderboard followed by Mike Bielawski (T26th) who carded a 77. Three Golden Eagles shot in the 80s Sunday - Mike Van Sickle (80), Mike McDonald (81), and Kelly Kretz (82). With a 286, co-host Indiana holds a convincing 17-stroke lead over current runners-up Ball State and VCU (tied at 303). The Hoosiers' Seth Brandon was the only golfer in the field to shoot a sub-70 round with a three-under 69. Monday's second round play will begin at 7 a.m. Central Time. Kretz will lead off for the Golden Eagles with a 7:45 a.m. tee time. The third and final round of the tournament will be played on Tuesday, March 18.
