Marquette Finishes Final Round At Pinehurst

MILWAUKEE - Marquette University turned in its best performance in three days at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 10th place in the 19-team field. The Golden Eagles shot a combined 908 (314-304-290) at the Centennial No. 8 Course in Pinehurst, N.C., as each player posted their best score of the tournament in today's final round. Junior Mike Van Sickle boasted MU's lowest individual score of the event with his one-under par 71. Van Sickle was two-under through 12 holes and carried a team-high five birdies. Collectively, MU tallied 14 birds on the day. Seniors Mike Bielawski (77-75-74) and Ted Gray (76-78-72) both finished at 226. Gray shot an even-par 72 in the third round. Gray and Bielawski were the only Golden Eagles to card three straight rounds in the 70s. Freshman Kelly Kretz rebounded from back-to-back rounds of 82 to fire a 73 and sophomore Mike McDonald, playing in his first tournament since last season, overall finished one stroke behind Kretz with a three-round total of 238 (81-79-78). Indiana, ranked No. 27 in the nation according to Golfstat.com, claimed the team title with an 865 (286-292-287) as each Hoosier placed in the top 10, including medalist Seth Brandon, who turned in an even-par 216 (69-75-72). Marquette, which tied with Western Carolina after posting the fifth-best team score of the final round, was within four strokes of St. Mary's (907), East Carolina (906), Ball State (906), and Wisconsin (904). Marquette will be one of 15 teams returning to action Monday, March 24 for the two-day Carter Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.
