Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's soccer team (2-7-1) wrapped up its three-match homestand Wednesday night at Valley Fields, falling to visiting Drake (7-3-2) by a score of 1-0 on a goal in the closing moments of regulation. Drake's Garrett Webb headed home a long service at the 87:49 mark for the game's only goal, although both squads had quality scoring chances throughout the contest. "This was a good example of how casual dominance is of no consequence if you can't follow through on your opportunities to score," head coach Louis Bennett said. "It was disappointing we weren't able to gain any momentum as we hit the road this weekend." The MU coaching staff took the opportunity the mid-week non-conference game presented by resting a number of Golden Eagle regulars. Freshman Adam Frydman made his Marquette debut in the back line and was joined in the starting lineup by a number of regular substitutes. Marquette generated a number of scoring chances, finishing the night with nine corner kicks. The set plays didn't result in anything Bulldog netminder Phillip Breuer was forced to deal with, however, and Drake's offside trap frustrated the MU forwards all night long. MU's offensive players were whistled on seven occasions for being behind the Drake defense when the ball was played. Freshman Josh Belfrage made a quick turn at the top of the box in the first half, but his shot went just wide. Midfielder Dan Addis broke free in transition midway through the second half, but his long-distance shot just missed the near post as well.
Senior Mike Carlson also fired a half-volley rocket from distance in the early moments, but his shot went right at the keeper. |
