Milwaukee - In a match that featured a tale of two halves, the difference in the contest proved to be an unlucky break for the Marquette University men's soccer team in a 2-1 BIG EAST Conference loss to Georgetown Saturday night at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles had knotted the score at 1-1 in the opening moments of the second half and continued to control play as the stanza continued. A free kick from the right side by GU's Scott Larrabee floated toward the middle of the box and deflected off the back of a MU defender. The ball bounced back across the mouth of the goal and all Marquette netminder Matt Pyzdrowski could do was watch it sail into the back of the net. Marquette concluded the match with 10 shots, nine of which came in the second half. The offensive attack continued to put pressure on the Hoya back line, including a six-yard shot by forward Sam Etim that was deflected over the bar in the final minute of regulation. "We did a much better job of taking care of the ball in the second half and the results were very clear," head coach Louis Bennett said. "We had some good possession and created some quality chances." After falling behind in the closing minutes of the first half, Marquette wasted little time after the intermission to net the equalizer. Junior Duncan Silvert-Noftle broke free down the right side and his cross found the foot of classmate Dan Addis in the box. The Dublin, Ohio, native was able to flick the ball toward goal with his left boot and it snuck just inside the far post.
"I was proud of the fact that until the referee blew the final whistle we kept pressing offensively," Bennett said. "Our players are trying their best and will hopefully be rewarded for that in the near future." |
