MU Celebrates 'A Total Day' With Wins Over Lincoln, Cardinal Stritch
April 19, 2008
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team recorded a pair of shutouts Saturday at Valley Fields, while the Golden Eagles' offense also impressed. Marquette soundly defeated Lincoln College (Ill.) by a final tally of 10-0 before claiming a narrow 1-0 decision over local opponent Cardinal Stritch. "Today was a total day," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "We got some really productive things down in the attacking third against a variation of opposition and a variation of styles. Credit must go to the back line. All of the back line played very, very well -- the goalkeeper and the two central defender positions." Sophomore Josh Curry led the Golden Eagles by netting three goals in the morning tilt against Lincoln College. Marquette held a 4-0 advantage at the intermission and scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half en route to the win. Nick Kay assisted Anthony Colaizzi in the second half for the eventual game-winner in the afternoon contest versus the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch, whose main campus is situated less than 10 miles from Marquette's on the northeast side of Milwaukee. "Cardinal Stritch was very direct and very forceful," Bennett explained. "We possessed the ball and had chances. We weren't playing against any slouches. We proved our fitness. Today I thought, in fairness, we outplayed them. Considering we may have had a little bit of tired minds and tired bodies, we maintained a level of play and that's something I was excited about." Next weekend the Golden Eagles will get another doubleheader dosage as they conclude their spring season with the inaugural Wisconsin [NCAA] Division I Spring Cup to be played at The Valley on Sunday, April 27. Marquette will kick off against cross-town UW-Milwaukee at 9:30 a.m. while UW-Green Bay faces Wisconsin.
Winners of each match will then go head-to-head, as will the two losing teams, immediately following. Matches will be held on both the natural grass and artificial pitches at Valley Fields. |
