Golden Eagles Sweep Southern Illinois 7-0 At Home
Feb. 2, 2008
Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis team (3-2) remained undefeated at home with a 7-0 non-conference victory over Southern Illinois (0-1) Saturday afternoon at the Helfaer Tennis & Recreation Center. The Golden Eagles, who have posted three shutout wins in the opening weeks of the dual match campaign, have yet to drop a singles or doubles matchup on Marquette's campus. "I thought our doubles effort was much better today and we were able to maintain a consistent level of energy," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We got off to good starts in singles, but once we clinched the fourth point the energy dipped a bit. Fortunately, we were able to regain control in the remaining matches." Marquette opened play by claiming the doubles point with victories at all three positions. Sophomore Mark Rutherford and senior Brett Binkley improved to 17-6 on the year with an 8-5 win at No. 1 and Stephen Shao and Pete Van Lieshout secured the point with an 8-3 decision at No. 2. The Golden Eagles quickly moved ahead 3-0 with a pair of straight-set wins by Rutherford and Binkley at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Junior Stephen Shao sealed the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Anton Leonenko at the No. 3 spot. MU returns to action Sunday afternoon at Noon when the team hosts Eastern Illinois.
