Marquette Wraps Up Play At Ball State Fall Invitational

Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis team will travel to the West Coast to compete in a trio of contests against California schools over spring break.

Between March 17 and March 22, the Golden Eagles will take on three schools in six days, before closing out the regular season with four April home matches.

MU (10-4) has won eight of its last 10 matches, sweeping five of those contests 7-0. The Golden Eagles' four losses have come in pairs, to Purdue and No. 58 Louisville in January and most recently, to No. 37 Arizona State and No. 28 Wisconsin in mid-February. After five 7-0 losses in the 2006-07 campaign, MU has not yet been shutout this season, holding its own against nationally-ranked foes.

The Golden Eagles will first take on the Pacific Tigers on Monday, March 17, at 8 p.m. CT. The Stockton, Calif. squad, under the instruction of head coach Guido Baumann in his 11th season, holds a .500 team overall singles record (27-27) and has posted a 12-15 overall doubles record in the first nine matches of the season. Freshman David Gonzalez boasts one of three winning singles records on the team, and is 8-1 overall. Gonzalez is undefeated from both the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions this year. Gonzalez has paired up with Moritz Starke to combine for a 4-3 spring doubles record.

MU will travel across the Bay Bridge to battle the University of San Francisco Thursday, March 20 at 4 p.m. CT at the Olympic Club.

In the final leg of their West Coast tour, the Golden Eagles will travel south to visit Santa Clara University on Saturday, March 22 at 2:30 p.m. CT to play their third match in six days. Under first-year head coach Derek Mills, the Broncos (2-8) of the West Coast Conference play just two regular season matches outside the California border. After finishing last season with a respectable 20-8 overall record (5-1 WCC), SCU graduated two All-WCC players, but return sophomore Jay Wong (All-WCC singles second team) and juniors Brian Brogan (All-WCC singles honorable mention) and Blane Shields (All-WCC singles honorable mention).

Marquette enters the trip with having swept three in a row, and eight of the last 10. The squad boasts a 8-1 home record with their only Milwaukee loss a 4-3 defeat against No. 37 Arizona State. Medan (25-7) is the No. 1 Golden Eagle with a team-best 25 wins. The No. 1 pair of Binkley and Rutherford have posted a 22-7 overall record (8-3 dual). Marquette has lost just five doubles games in three matches.
