Despite four players in double figures, the Marquette women's basketball team was unable to leave Queens, N.Y. with a win as St. John's topped the Golden Eagles, 77-67. Sophomore Janelle Harris led Marquette with a career-best 17 points, while freshmen Jocelyn Mellen and Angel Robinson contributed 13 and 12, respectively. Junior Krystal Ellis rounded out the quartet with 10 points.

With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 12-9 overall, 4-4 in BIG EAST play, while the Redstorm earn their second straight win and improve to 12-9 (3-5 BIG EAST).

The Golden Eagles went into the intermission up four points, 39-35. Harris gave MU a team-high 15 first-half points.

After the break, St. John's went on a 7-2 run to knot the game for the ninth time at 42 apiece. Marquette took another five-point lead, 49-44, with 14:39 left to play.

A three-point bucket from McMorris pushed MU's lead to six points, 58-52, but St. John's answered with a 9-0 run to go ahead, 61-58.

The two teams traded buckets from then on with neither team holding more than a two-point lead.

With 3:12 left to play, the Redstorm took a four-point lead, 67-63. Two free throws by Monique McLean gave St. John's a six-point lead, 69-63, with 1:49 to play.

Mellen countered with a bucket in the paint to come within four points, 69-65, with 1:37 to go. MU held St. John's scoreless on its next possession and Ellis was sent to the charity stripe with just under one minute remaining. She hit both of her shots at the foul line to come within two, 69-67.

St. John's connected on eight of 10 free throws over the final 44 seconds to take the 77-67 win after Ellis and Robinson both fouled out of the game.

 

 

For the game, Marquette shot 36.2 percent on 25-of-69 shooting from the floor.

Kia Wright and McLean each scored over 20 points for St. John's who finished the game 43.9 percent from the field (25-of-57).

Marquette won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding the Redstorm, 43-36, and scored 30 second chance points as a result of 22 offensive boards.

Marquette shot 38.9 percent in the first, connecting on 14-of-36 attempts, while the Redstorm shot 52 percent from the floor.

With Marquette up by four points, 28-24, with 7:43 left in the first, St. John's went on a 9-2 run to go ahead, 31-28. Junior Erin Monfre drilled a trifecta to tie the score at 31 apiece with 5:55 to go in the first.

For the remainder of the half, Harris, Mellen and Kovalenko combined for the Golden Eagles' final eight points of the first.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action at the Al McGuire Center on Tuesday, Feb. 5, when they host Cincinnati at 7 p.m.
