The Marquette women's basketball team has earned an automatic berth and a first-round bye in Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) announced Monday night by WNIT officials. The Golden Eagles will meet the winner of South Dakota State versus Creighton in the second round on Monday, March 24. Location and time are to be determined.

Creighton (20-11) of the Missouri Valley Conference will play at Summit League representative South Dakota State (26-3) on Thursday, March 20.

The selection into the 48-team field marks the sixth consecutive postseason berth for MU, which complied an 16-14 overall record and a 8-8 mark in BIG EAST play. It is also the 13th post-season appearance in program history, 10th since head coach Terri Mitchell began her tenure at Marquette in 1996.

The Golden Eagles last played in the WNIT in 2005 and won five straight games en route to an appearance in the championship game. Marquette is 6-5 all-time in WNIT/NWIT play.

If Marquette's hosts the second round tickets are available! Reserved seats are $8 and general admission is $5. For information please call 414-288-GOMU (4668).

* The WNIT awards an automatic berth to each of the nation's 31 conferences. The spot goes to the team that finishes the highest in the regular-season conference standings that does not advance to the NCAA Tournament.
